Frequently Asked Questions
What are your sculptures and jewellery made from?
My sculptures are primarily made from polymer clay- A clay that becomes hard once baked. The brands of clay I use are Fimo, Sculpy and Premo. I also use liquid clay, resin, ceramics, card, wire, pastels, paint and lacquers.
How long does it take to make one sculpture?
This all depends on the complexity of the sculpture. Rice and noodle dishes take me the longest as I roll each piece individually. A sculpture of a sandwich for example might take me 4 hours, a dish of fried rice could take me 15. The complexity of the dish is reflected in my prices.
Where did you learn to do this?
I was lucky enough to grow up with artistic parents who encouraged my creativity and from a young age I was very taken by clay and sculpting small things. When I had to stop full time work around six years ago I rediscovered my love of sculpting, and through many hours of trial an error, a lot of experimentation, a couple of YouTube tutorials and a lot of looking at cook books I am still learning new tricks every day.
How do you figure out pricing and cost of your work?
Prices are calculated by estimated time/materials/shipping/complexity/packaging.
My prices are the way they are because my works are one of a kind. Some people have trouble understanding paying high prices for small things but what you are paying for is a piece of art that I have worked hard on to perfect and make special for you.
I believe that artists deserve to be paid a living wage.
Can I commission you to make me something specific?
I usually only work on a commission basis, where I make completely bespoke sculptures which come framed and are made to match photographs or descriptions of loved family dishes or special meals shared between loved ones. I am currently not taking commissions but when I do re-open I will announce this via Instagram, with clear instructions on how to go about commissioning my work. Bear in mind my commissioned work is more expensive and I do require a good amount of time to work on it - so it can never be a last minute gift!
I love making memorable pieces of artwork which people treasure forever. Unfortunately my health is restricting me too much at the moment for me to be under any time pressure though.
